Program*

Einojuhani Rautavaara | Cantus Arcticus, Concerto for Birds and Orchestra (36’)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Piano Concerto No. 23 A major K. 488 (26’)
John Williams | Theme From “Jaws” (3’)
Claude Debussy | La Mer (24')

Inspired by nature, this program features Mozart and a piece with bird song in the first half and the ocean in the second half, complete with John Williams’ infamous theme from Jaws!

John Williams described his theme as “grinding away at you, just as a shark would do, instinctual, relentless, unstoppable.”

Of Note

Concerto for Birds and Orchestra incorporates recordings of birdsong.

Mozart’s 23rd Piano Concerto is an emotional musical rollercoaster.

Jessica Choe has performed in prestigious concert halls across America, from the Kennedy Center to Lincoln Center.

Rautavaara’s 1972 Concerto for Birds and Orchestra is one of the Finnish composer’s best-known works.

Built around just two repeated bass notes, Jaws' rhythmic motif recalls a heartbeat.

Debussy’s La Mer (the ocean) is a magical, ever-changing soundscape that runs the cosmic gamut from serene tranquility to terrifying, awe-inspiring power.
